Whistler Vacation Rental Scams.

Never wire transfer rent deposits or payments for vacation rentals.

Be wary of Whistler deals that sound too good to be true. Here’s a sample of one Whistler scam that was exposed yesterday…

Luckily, the renter had a feeling the deal was just too good to be real. Even though he had a phone conversation with the scammer, it just didn’t feel right.

Quick Google search found the same email and wording on our SCAM pages.

1. AGREEMENT: VACATION RENTAL HOME, the Owner, and Renter agree as follows: Above Renter is an adult and will be an occupant of the unit during the entire reserved period. Other occupants will be family members, friends or responsible adults.

5. CANCELLATION: Should you wish to cancel this reservation, notice of cancellation MUST BE IN WRITING AND RECEIVED before 3 days to your Arrival date. If less a cancellation fee of $50 dollars will be deducted from the paid rent and you’ll be paid the rest.

6. CHECK IN: Check in time starts from 9:00 am. Keys will be ready for pick up at property location.

7. CHECK OUT: Check out time is 6:00 pm next day, except for guest with pets; it is 2:00 pm. THERE IS AN EXTRA CHARGE FOR LATE CHECK OUT AND PRIOR APPROVAL IS NEEDED. Please leave all keys and remote controls at the location. A $50 hour fee will be charged for each hour (or portion thereof) past the required check out time. A $50 per item fee will be charged for each lost key.

8. CLEANING: Each property will be inspected, sanitized and cleaned after your departure. The rental fee you have paid will provide for four hours of normal cleaning so that you can enjoy your vacation up to the last moment. YOU ARE REQUIRED to leave the property in the same general condition that you received it by making sure, dishes are done and put away, and the home is generally picked up and ready to be vacuumed, dusted and sanitized.

9. WHAT WE SUPPLY: The property is equipped and set up as a fully furnished property that will include bedspreads, linens, blankets, pillows, towels, as well as a fully equipped kitchen, TVs, furnishings, BBQ grill, and outdoor furniture.

10. SLEEPING CAPACITY/DISTURBANCES: Renters and all other occupants will be required to vacate the premises and forfeit the rental fee and security deposit for any of the following: A. Occupancy exceeding the sleeping capacity stated on the reservation confirmation. B. Using the premises for any illegal activity, but not limited to, the possession, serving or consumption of alcoholic beverages by or to persons less than 21 years of age. C. Causing damage to the premises rented or to any of the neighboring properties. D. Any other acts which interferes with neighbors’ right to quiet enjoyment of their property.

11. There from. In any action concerning the rights, duties or liabilities of the parties to this agreement, their principals, agents, successors or assignees the prevailing party shall be entitled to recover reasonable attorney fees and costs.

FIREPLACES – The fireplace is a non-vented propane gas log fired firebox. Please do not throw any paper or other combustible materials in the fireplace. Fireplaces are turned off from April 15-September 15, they are not operational during this time of the year.

WATER AND SEPTIC – These are on wells and septic systems. The mineral content in the water is high. During a drought, the well water may have an odor. The septic system is very effective; however, it will clog up if improper material is flushed. DO NOT FLUSH anything other than toilet paper. No feminine products should be flushed at anytime. If it is found that feminine products have been flushed and clog the septic system, you could be charged damages of up to three hundred Canadian dollars ($300).

    Typically when I have rented from craigslist, since I have no assurance about anything, the owners I have dealt with in the past would typically take my information and forward the reservation info. I then confirm the information and make payment. Otherwise, you are asking people to just send money and if the person disappear all is lost (though I am not trying to be offensive, just honest) as there is no guarantee about anything. I am more than happy to give you my email address. Once I have rented with an owner, I don’t mind paying without the reservation. Unfortunately, the owners I have used in the past are booked for this coming weekend as we waited too long to look for accommodations. We are season passholders in Whistler so we travel up quite often. We use to own a place in whistler so I completely understand about respecting one’s home. That is what attracted me to your ad because when we would rent our old place, that was all we were asking of our guests (to have fun but be respectful). Please let me know what information you will need from us. Thanks.

    Typically, I confirm the reservation first and then I will pay 100% (thanks for the 10% discount) via paypal. However, I must have a way to confirm the reservation and validity of the house prior to payment. If you would prefer I go through your reservation desk, I can get confirmation from them and then pay them or you. However, I never pay for lodging unless I get the confirmation first. As the owner of the property, you can cancel my reservation at anytime. So if I don’t pay you, you have the option of cancelling. However, if I pay you without a reservation, I have no options. This is craigslist and there are a lot of fraudulent representation and I don’t want to fall victim. I assure you that once the reservation is made, I will immediately pay once I can confirm. You can cancel my reservation if I don’t pay you but I am looking for a quiet place to stay with my family and you are offering a good price but I need to know that everything is legitimate.       Sorry to hear that. Contact the Whistler RCMP with details. The more evidence they have, the better. Unfortunately, when you e-transfer or wire vacation rental deposits or rent payments, there’s no recourse. You may also want to contact Whistler Reception Services and let them know about this Whistler vacation rental scam, since they manage many units in Eagle Lodge. They may have more advice and could possibly give you a break on renting replacement unit for your trip. Please keep me posted on your progress.
